Chirag Paswan
Son of the great Indian politician Ram Vilas Paswan, Chirag Paswan is one of the leading figures in Indian politics. He is a member of parliament as well as the Ministry of Food Processing Industries’ Minister of State. He also serves as the president of the Lok Janshakti Party, also known as Ram Vilas.
Chirag Paswan Biography
The leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and the MP for the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat is Chirag Paswan, son of the late Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.
Chirag had originally hoped to become a Bollywood actor. He made his screen debut in the 2011 movie “Miley Naa Miley Hum,” but the film did not do well at the box office, which put a stop to his acting career. That’s why he changed his focus to politics, joining his father’s party, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), and becoming elected to the Lok Sabha.
The LJP had a period of decline after the Grand Alliance, a period in which Paswan did not occupy a cabinet seat for the first time since he entered Delhi politics in 1989. After a heart condition was discovered in 2013, Paswan handed the leadership over to his son, who realigned the party’s policy by joining the National Democratic Alliance, which resulted in wins in the elections of 2014 and 2019.
Prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Paswan delegated a great deal of authority to his son and allowed a handover of power—a calculated move that paid well politically. As a consequence of this action, the LJP gained momentum and went on to win six of the seven seats that were up for grabs, making it the second-largest party in the assembly behind the BJP. Later that year, in 2019, Chirag became the national president of the LJP.
For two main reasons, Chirag faced a formidable struggle in the 2020 Assembly elections. First of all, it was his first time entering the political sphere without his father. Second, Chirag lost Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direct backing once the LJP formally left the NDA coalition in Bihar.
A blow to Chirag’s political reputation came in 2022 when his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras broke away from the LJP to start his own party, the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party. During the general elections of 2024, Paswan focused on energizing the Dalit community in Bihar.
